Creating Variety With One Set

Working with a soft, muted color palette and just three continuous LED lights.

Building the Set with Intention

Jerry opens the course with a time-lapse of the set being built, walking through the evolution of the space before a single photograph is taken. He explains how refining props, textures, and design choices early creates a cohesive visual foundation that supports performance and posing later in the shoot.

Establishing Rhythm, Light, and Pose

Jerry begins photographing Cierra, refining the lighting while establishing a clear rhythm of direction and response. As the shoot unfolds, he demonstrates both effective and ineffective posing, explaining why small changes in body position dramatically affect the final image.

Direction, Permission, and Breaking the Rules

Jerry demonstrates how effective direction is often delivered through encouragement rather than correction, bridging each instruction with a genuine compliment. He refines the scene by subtly adjusting the mirror reflection and deliberately breaks traditional posing rules to allow Cierra’s individuality and rawness to come through.

Precision, Awareness, and Patience

Jerry shifts Cierra’s position within the frame while keeping the overall composition and camera placement consistent. He openly addresses missing the mirror reflection initially, then demonstrates how recognizing and correcting that oversight transforms the image.

When Opportunity Walks Into the Frame

Jerry’s Goldendoodles, Jazz and Zoe, make an unexpected appearance, and an impromptu series that embraces spontaneity without compromising the visual integrity of the set. Their natural tones blend seamlessly into the warm, muted palette, reinforcing color harmony while adding personality and charm.

Isolation, Detail, and Intimacy

Using the same set, Jerry moves in close to isolate the beauty of the mirror reflection, shifting focus from environment to expression. By introducing a vintage perfume bottle, he creates a new visual narrative rooted in elegance and subtle storytelling.

Deconstruction and Practical Takeaways

Jerry steps back to unpack the shoot in full, breaking down each light and every prop used throughout the set. He explains how thoughtful placement, restraint, and intention matter more than budget, showing how affordable online finds and antique store pieces can be combined to create a refined and believable environment.
