What's Included
Introduction
We open this course in a hotel room, where I outline my technical approach and overall mission for the day. I speak to the idea that the shoot could unfold in many different directions, setting the tone for a spontaneous and creative journey through New York City.
Window Light
Before leaving the hotel I use a sheer blind as a giant soft source to create bright high key portraits in the window. You will learn how to expose for a clean white background, build quick rapport, and direct micro poses for elegant lines.
Off Camera Flash
Staying in the same scene I introduce a softbox off camera to shape the face while keeping the ambient backlight. You will learn how to balance flash power with existing light for polish, depth, and consistent catchlights in a short time.
Precision Lighting
Switching to a speedlight with a grid I isolate light on Mikal’s face and let her body fall to shadow. You will see how a narrowed beam changes the mood and see why trusting an initial instinct–and knowing when to stop–is a professional skill.
Texture & Abstraction
I place Mikal behind the blind to add texture and layering, combining window light with continuous light for atmosphere. You will learn to turn simple elements into conceptual portraits that feel refined and intentional.
Rule Breaking Underlighting
I use underlighting which is typically unflattering to build tension and drama. You will learn when and how to bend lighting rules to create striking and memorable portraits with attitude.
Beginning Urban Photowalk
Out on the street I demonstrate how to read available light quickly and pose a subject to suit direction and quality. The focus is observation, adaptability, and clean execution in real world conditions.
Movement & Mixed Lighting
Using architectural lines to frame Mikal I balance ambient city light with off camera flash and introduce movement for energy. You will learn to craft a varied series from wide environmental views to tight details without changing locations.
Behind the Soho Photowalk
Because the pace of the next shoot is fast, I slow down to review my favorite frames before we get started. I explain the concept, timing, and technical choices so you can connect what you see to how it was achieved.
Finding Inspiration
A simple A frame sign outside a Soho glasses store becomes the spark for a full shoot. You will learn to spot reflections, typography, and textures as design tools and to turn a passing idea into a cohesive mini series.
Creative Flow
After securing permission, I work inside the glasses store and in the storefront display, building ideas shot to shot. You will see how trust and responsiveness fuel a creative flow state where one strong image triggers the next.
Stairwell Portraits
Granted access to the back stairwell, I blend gritty ambient light with off camera flash for editorial style results. You will learn framing through architecture, color balance control to shift mood, and efficient lighting in tight spaces.
Cinematic Alley
I begin with sculpting natural light then switch to Ice Light 3s in RGB mode for a futuristic look inspired by Sith and Matrix style references. Learn to use color, posing, and atmosphere to transform an ordinary alley into a set.
Reflection & Deconstruction
As a bridge to the night work I walk through selected images to unpack concept, execution, and the environment’s role. You will gain a framework for analyzing your own work and articulating the reasons behind creative choices.
Night Portraits
In this shoot, I balance neon, street lamps, and marquee bulbs with a portable LED for refined cinematic portraits. You will learn practical settings, color management, and bokeh control to keep skin tones clean while preserving city atmosphere.
Times Square
In the busiest location of all, Times Square, I ignore the chaos and direct Mikal with confidence using dual Ice Light 3s to craft bold heroic portraits of a modern day Jedi. You will learn poise under pressure, crowd awareness, and strong wide angle composition against towering billboards.
